February Adventures at Waverley

Friends of ours were in a hockey tournament at a local community centre one Saturday, so we took the boys over to watch.  The snow was falling pretty steadily and was affecting the ice surface and the puck kept disappearing from view.  So,  when in Winnipeg, apparently, the fans and parents call a time out, hop on the ice and run back and forth shoveling the snow out of the way.  So entertaining!

Sharing lunch and hot chocolate together with the Hensen's.

This year the city brought in ice carvers from China for an ice sculpture festival down at the Forks.  We walked around the outside as the view from the inside would have cost us $80!

Skating on the river is still FREE!

There's an ice maze and a warming hut design competition.

And best of all, we could push Daddy around on a chair with skiis.  Hard work, but safe!

Xavier wanted to bring these ice and snow blocks home.  They were inspired to carve them.  Alas, they are still sitting on our patio.

The biggest event in February for us was SPELL WARS at Linden Christian School.  They went all out with the theme.  All the middle school attended (Gr. 5-8) with two competitors from each classroom.

Jackson made it to the fourth round (more than halfway) and then mispelled the word "facade".
Then Darth Vader causes them to fake their dramatic death and be dragged offstage by a pair of Storm Troopers.  Totally fun!

The winner was parade through the line up of crossed light sabres and received her medal from Princess Leia.

All Jackson wanted for his hard work in studying list words and preparing for the spelling bee was a slurpee.  Here in Winnipeg - Slurpee capital of Canada - we can walk to get one!

Yes, you can still skate on the Duck Pond in Assinaboine Park.

On really cold days, like -34 wind chill, we hibernate!  Enjoying Lego and books ...
And working on Jack's Science Fair Project!  He (We) is (are) attempting to extract the elemental iron filings out of different iron-fortified cereals and comparing the amounts to what's listed on the label.

Many Thank-You to our friends at Niagara Orchard Community Church for adding some joy (and sugar!) to our "Happy Valentines Day" celebration!   Love you all!
